## Description

Around 6,000 square metres of warehouse space, a temperature-controlled zone rated at 5 to 10 tonnes and a 1,000 square metre paved truck apron define the cargo footprint of Basra International Airport (BSR). Since 2021 the air cargo terminal has been run by Lebanese Air Transport (LAT) in partnership with the Directorate of Iraqi Airports, handling general freight, express shipments and pharmaceuticals. The airport is critical to southern Iraq's oil and gas sector, channelling drilling equipment and spare parts toward the production fields around Basra. Every consignment passes X-ray screening and, where required, sniffer-dog inspection before loading. BSR works alongside the deep-water port of Umm Qasr, which carries the bulk of Iraq's seaborne trade, giving forwarders a fast air option next to ocean freight, with road links running straight into the industrial zones along the Shatt al-Arab. Locally based Basra Airlines announced plans to launch a freighter division with A330Fs from early 2026, though independently confirmed operating data is not yet available. When capacity is tight, Baghdad International (BGW) and Kuwait International (KWI) are the practical alternatives.
