## Description

In autumn, when the sea ice is late, polar bears patrol the shore beside the gravel strip. Barter Island LRRS Airport (IATA: BTI, ICAO: PABA) shares the island with Kaktovik, the only settlement on the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and home to around 280 Iñupiat. Wright Air Service and Everts Air fly in from Fairbanks, carrying passengers and village supplies; the field is owned by the North Slope Borough and its runway dates to the 1950s DEW Line warning network. Commercial air freight plays no role here – North Slope cargo routes through Deadhorse (SCC) or Utqiagvik (BRW).
