## Description

A round-the-clock airfield 17 km west of the city, Barnaul German Titov Airport (BAX/UNBB) handled about 1.3 million passengers in 2023 and serves as the main air gateway for Russia's Altai Krai. It accepts both passenger and cargo aircraft, and a new terminal plus an expansion of the international facilities and runway have been under way since the 2020s. Freight is dominated by belly cargo on domestic services; a dedicated cargo terminal with regular freighter operations is not confirmed. Western sanctions imposed from 2022 heavily restrict international air freight to and from Russia, and European and North American carriers do not serve the airport. For larger consignments out of Altai, Novosibirsk Tolmachevo (OVB), about 230 km north, offers substantially more capacity. The R256 Chuysky Trakt highway links Barnaul to Novosibirsk and southwards toward Mongolia, and defines the trucking leg to that hub.
