More than 1,100 square miles of instrumented underwater range, some 42,000 square miles of controlled airspace and up to 2.1 million square miles of extended range when required: those figures describe Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) Barking Sands, the US Navy installation whose airfield carries the codes BKH/PHBK, near Kekaha on the west side of Kauai. Billed as the world's largest instrumented multi-domain range, it employs close to 1,000 defence and contractor personnel, making it Kauai's third-largest employer. No scheduled passenger or freight service operates here, and there is no commercial cargo infrastructure, customs post or handling agent available to forwarders; movements support military testing, training and range resupply.
