## Description

Operating since 1985, Barisal Airport (BZL/VGBR) serves a delta city known as the "Venice of Bengal" for the canal traffic that still moves most of its freight. Scheduled service is limited to the domestic route to Dhaka, currently flown by Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines; Novoair and Air Astra do not serve it at present. The airport has no cargo terminal, no freighter operation and no customs post for air freight, making it a passenger field rather than a freight option. Regional export consignments — rice, perishables and garment-sector inputs — are trucked roughly 170 km north to Hazrat Shahjalal International (DAC) in Dhaka, the country's principal cargo gateway, or alternatively to Chittagong (CGP). Bulk cargo still travels most cheaply on the delta's dense inland waterway network, complemented by the Padma Bridge, opened in 2022, which has cut road transit times towards Dhaka considerably. Dhaka's new third terminal is expanding handling and cargo capacity, indirectly improving Barisal's access to international air freight networks.
