## Description

Heat shimmers off the salt flats long before noon at a desert strip 378 metres below sea level — the lowest airfield on Earth, west of the Dead Sea and a short drive from the Masada fortress. Opened in 1963 and run by Sun Air Aviation together with the Tamar Regional Council, Bar Yehuda (MTZ, ICAO LLMZ) serves sightseeing flights, Dead Sea skydiving, charters and duty as an alternate airport. It has no scheduled service, no cargo handling and no customs facilities. The negative elevation combined with desert temperatures pushes density altitude up and cuts the payload of the light aircraft based here. Israel's air freight moves through Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) near Tel Aviv, roughly 90 km to the northwest. The region's potash, bromine and magnesium leave by truck and through the seaport of Ashdod rather than by air.
