## Description

The world's largest rare-earth deposit lies at Bayan Obo, north of Baotou, yet almost none of that tonnage ever sees an aircraft — Donghe International Airport (BAV, ICAO ZBOW) moves parcels, samples and spare parts instead. It handled roughly 1.97 million passengers and 3,624 tonnes of cargo in 2025, all of it belly freight on trunk routes to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and other major cities. There are no scheduled freighter services and no dedicated cargo terminal. The airport sits 8 km southeast of downtown in Baotou's Donghe district, serving Inner Mongolia's largest industrial city. Bulk flows from the Baogang steel complex and the rare-earth industry travel by rail and road. International air freight is consolidated at Beijing (PEK/PKX) or Tianjin (TSN), while Hohhot Baita (HET), some 150 km east, offers a shorter trucking leg.
