## Description

Bameza airfield was laid out as a project airstrip for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in the Metekel zone of the Benishangul-Gumuz region; the runway, built by the contractor Webuild, is a little over one kilometre long. There is no scheduled service, no cargo terminal and no customs clearance, and the airspace around the dam site was closed to civil traffic in 2020 on security grounds. Commercial air freight for Ethiopia moves through Addis Ababa Bole (ADD), more than 700 kilometres to the east, with Asosa (ASO) the nearest airport served on a scheduled basis.
