## Description

Balmaceda Airport (BBA/SCBA) is best understood as a tourism gateway rather than a freight point, even though its roughly 624,000 passengers in 2024 make it the largest airport in Chile's Aysén region. It provides the main air access to Coyhaique, 55 kilometres to the northwest, and to the Carretera Austral, with LATAM, Sky Airline and Aerovías DAP flying to Santiago, Puerto Montt and Concepción; ground handling is provided by Menzies Aviation. The airport has no dedicated cargo terminal, so what little airfreight there is travels as belly load on passenger services, and no freighters operate here. Surface connectivity is the real constraint: the Carretera Austral northwards is only continuous via ferry sections, while the Argentine border lies barely 4 kilometres east, so northbound trucking often runs through Argentine territory. Larger or time-critical consignments are therefore routed through the Santiago hub (SCL), with Puerto Montt (PMC), some 500 kilometres north, serving as a regional consolidation point. For forwarders, BBA is a delivery point for Aysén rather than a transhipment location.
