Council-owned and council-run, Bairnsdale Airport (BSJ / ICAO YBNS) is a general-aviation field in East Gippsland, Victoria, with no commercial cargo handling of any kind. It lies about 7 km south-west of the township on Bengworden Road off the Princes Highway, roughly 300 km east of Melbourne. Day-to-day activity comes from flight training, private aircraft, Air Ambulance Victoria — the field is among regional Victoria's busiest for patient retrievals — the Victoria Police Air Wing, and summer aerial firefighting operations. There is no freight terminal, no customs post and no scheduled freighter service, and the operator currently charges neither landing nor parking fees. The region's dairy, timber and horticultural output leaves by truck on the Princes Highway, supported by the Bairnsdale–Melbourne rail line. Air freight for eastern Victoria is therefore handled at Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL), roughly three to four hours away by road. The Australian Airports Association named Bairnsdale National Small Regional Aerodrome of the Year in 2018, 2022 and again in 2025.
