## Description

UUD/UIUU is Baikal International Airport, twelve kilometres west of Ulan-Ude, capital of Russia's Republic of Buryatia and the main air gateway to the Lake Baikal region. A new 6,500-square-metre domestic terminal opened in November 2024, while the former building now handles international routes to China, Mongolia and Thailand. Passenger traffic was about 540,000 in 2021, with roughly 840,000 projected for 2025. For freight, the airport operates a cargo terminal and a customs warehouse, handling both belly cargo on passenger flights and occasional freighter movements. An open-skies regime in force since 2017 grants fifth-freedom rights to attract foreign carriers. Ulan-Ude sits on the Trans-Siberian Railway; the nearest larger cargo hub is Irkutsk (IKT), about 450 kilometres to the northwest.
