## Description

Belly space on scheduled passenger flights is the only air cargo capacity at Bahia – Jorge Amado Airport (IOS) in Ilhéus, which handled more than 630,000 passengers in 2025 and ranks second only to Porto Seguro among inland airports in Brazil's northeast. Operated since 2018 by the private company Socicam on behalf of Bahia state, it is served by Azul, Gol, LATAM and Voepass to São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Salvador, plus seasonal links such as the Rio de Janeiro service Gol launched in December 2025. There is no dedicated freight terminal, no all-cargo operation and no certified cool chain on site. Commercial air freight for southern Bahia — cocoa and chocolate products from the Costa do Cacau, handicrafts, spare parts for the tourism trade — is consolidated at Salvador International (SSA), roughly 460 road kilometres north, with Porto Seguro (BPS) as a southern alternative. The BR-101 federal highway and the coastal BA-001 provide road access, while the port of Ilhéus sits on the doorstep and makes multimodal routings attractive for heavy consignments. In May 2026 the state government and the operator discussed further terminal upgrade works.
