## Description

Roughly 3,600 metres of runway capable of taking widebody freighters sit unused by commercial aviation at Bagram Airfield (OAI), 60 kilometres north of Kabul: for two decades the largest United States base in Afghanistan, it has been under Taliban administration since 2021 and runs no civilian scheduled or cargo service. There are no slots for commercial carriers, no handling agents and no customs clearance for trade shipments. Since September 2025 the site has also been the subject of a public dispute over a possible American return, rejected by the Taliban leadership, and in March 2026 Kabul reported repelling an attempted Pakistani airstrike on the grounds. Air cargo for central and northern Afghanistan therefore moves through Kabul International (KBL), with Mazar-i-Sharif (MZR) in the north and Herat (HEA) in the west as secondary options. For general cargo and project loads, overland routes via the Hairatan crossing to Uzbekistan and Torkham to Pakistan usually remain more economical. Any logistics plan citing Bagram should be redirected to KBL.
