## Description

One million passengers a year is the design capacity of the first phase at Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ/VEAY), and that number tells you what the airport is for: pilgrims, not pallets. Opened on 30 December 2023, it has no dedicated cargo terminal and no publicly reported freight tonnage. Planned phases add a second terminal of 30,000 square metres with eight aerobridges for five to seven million passengers, and a later runway extension to 3,750 metres. International status has been granted but international services have not started, and while the runway stays short, widebody and freighter operations are off the table. Air freight for Ayodhya and Faizabad therefore moves through Lucknow Chaudhary Charan Singh (LKO), about 135 km west, which handles international traffic and has its own cargo facilities. Varanasi (VNS) roughly 200 km south-east and Gorakhpur (GOP) about 140 km north-east are the regional alternatives, with Delhi (DEL), India's largest air cargo gateway, taking intercontinental volumes. Customs clears at the arrival airport rather than in Ayodhya, and the road leg from Lucknow along the national highway takes only a few hours.
