## Description

Ethiopian Airlines is the only scheduled operator at Axum Airport (AXU/HAAX), linking the ancient Tigrayan capital with Addis Ababa on De Havilland Dash 8-Q400 turboprops. Scheduled service returned on 9 June 2024, after airfield and terminal repairs contracted at about 290 million Ethiopian birr, and it survived a short suspension in late January 2026 that ended when flights restarted on 3 February 2026. There is no dedicated cargo terminal here — freight moves as belly cargo in the turboprop hold, which caps weight, volume and dangerous-goods options. Shippers with real air freight requirements route through Addis Ababa Bole (ADD), Africa's leading cargo gateway, roughly 1,000 road kilometres to the south. Closer regional alternatives are Shire Inda Selassie (SHC), about 50 km west, and Mekelle Alula Aba Nega (MQX), some 200 road kilometres to the south-east. Because Ethiopia is landlocked, the road corridor to the port of Djibouti remains the backbone for anything too heavy or too low-value to fly.
