## Description

A A$8 million freight terminal, opened in 2024, gave Avalon Airport (AVV/YMAV) the capacity to process up to 100,000 tonnes of cargo a year — roughly ten times its previous throughput. Sitting at Lara in the City of Greater Geelong, about 50 km south-west of Melbourne, the airport runs the facility around the clock for both international and domestic consignments. The runway accommodates Boeing 747 and Antonov freighters, supporting direct links to Asia, the Middle East and the United States. Handling covers general cargo, mail, time-sensitive perishables and dangerous goods, and the building was among the first in Australia built to the Australian Border Force's tightened screening standards. Road access is the commercial argument: about 15 minutes to the Port of Geelong, 35 minutes to the Port of Melbourne and 45 minutes to Melbourne Tullamarine (MEL), which remains the obvious alternative for shippers, with Essendon Fields (MEB) an option for smaller charter loads.
