## Description

The Shendra–Bidkin industrial corridor around Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar — automotive plants and breweries above all — generates more freight than its own airport can move. Aurangabad Airport (IATA: IXU, ICAO: VAAU), run by the Airports Authority of India, handles domestic flights to Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad plus seasonal Hajj charters, and has no dedicated cargo terminal: small consignments travel through the passenger building while a separate freight facility for perishable and non-perishable agricultural produce remains at the proposal stage. Its 9,300 ft runway (about 2,835 m) limits operations to narrowbody and regional aircraft. Land acquisition for the runway extension began in January 2026, covering roughly 143 hectares across Chikalthana, Murtizapur and Mukundwadi at an estimated total of around Rs 500 crore including compensation. Until that work is done, forwarders truck regional air freight some 330 km to Mumbai (BOM), with Pune (PNQ) a nearer option for domestic consignments. Passenger demand is underpinned by the UNESCO-listed Ajanta and Ellora caves.
