## Description

When Athens International Airport «Eleftherios Venizelos» (IATA: ATH, ICAO: LGAV) opened at Spata in March 2001, it replaced the cramped seaside airfield of Ellinikon – today it is Greece's undisputed number one for both passengers and freight. In 2024 the airport handled around 125,000 tonnes of air cargo, up roughly a third year on year, the strongest growth of any major airport in south-eastern Europe, with Asian e-commerce flows increasingly using Athens as their gateway into the Greek market. On the passenger side, ATH is the home base of Aegean Airlines and set a record of about 31.9 million passengers in 2024, with traffic rising a further 7.6 percent in the first half of 2025. Cargo handling is provided by Goldair Handling and Skyserv in a dedicated cargo zone; most tonnage moves as bellyhold freight on passenger aircraft, supplemented by express and charter freighters. The Attiki Odos toll motorway (A6) links the airport, some 30 kilometres east of central Athens, directly to the national motorway network, while island-bound shipments typically continue by truck to the port of Piraeus for ferry loading. Operator Athens International Airport S.A. holds a concession running to 2046 and has been listed on the Athens Stock Exchange since 2024.
