## Description

Altitude is the decisive constraint at Asmara International Airport (IATA: ASM, ICAO: HHAS): sitting at roughly 2,300 metres above sea level with a comparatively short runway, the field limits take-off weight and payload, and large widebody freighters such as the B747 or MD-11 cannot serve it. Asmara is nonetheless Eritrea's largest airport and the only one with regular scheduled service, so effectively all of the country's air freight passes through it — as belly cargo on passenger aircraft, since a dedicated cargo terminal with published tonnage is not confirmed. Scheduled carriers have included EgyptAir, flydubai, flynas, Turkish Airlines and Tarco Aviation, giving practical routings via Dubai, Cairo and Istanbul. Connectivity is volatile: in July 2024 the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority instructed Ethiopian Airlines to suspend its Eritrea flights by September, and state carrier Eritrean Airlines had no flights scheduled as of April 2025. Import documentation and permits should be arranged well in advance, as clearance timelines in Eritrea are not comparable with regional hubs. For heavy or bulk consignments the sea route via the Red Sea port of Massawa, about 110 road kilometres from Asmara, is usually the more workable option, with Djibouti (JIB) serving as a regional air freight fallback.
