## Description

Southern Jordan's tourism and industry both lean on Aqaba King Hussein International (AQJ/OJAQ), the air gateway to Petra and Wadi Rum that handled over 300,000 passengers in 2023. The airport sits inside the Aqaba Special Economic Zone, created in 2001, and operates its own air cargo terminal plus an Aqaba Airport Free Trade Zone offering customs clearance, warehousing and links to international shipping lines. An open-skies policy lets it take on freight flights with few restrictions. Its real strength is multimodality: Jordan's only seaport, on the Red Sea, lies just a few kilometres away, so air, sea and road meet within the zone. Heavy and bulk shipments still move through the Port of Aqaba, while time-critical goods can ride on air freight. For northern Jordan, Queen Alia (AMM) remains the larger cargo base, but for the southern free zone AQJ is the obvious entry point.
