## Description

Aomori Prefecture grows more apples than anywhere else in Japan, yet almost none of them leave through Aomori Airport (IATA: AOJ, ICAO: RJSA). The airport moved 644 tonnes of cargo in 2024 — belly freight on passenger flights rather than dedicated freighter traffic, and no dedicated cargo terminal is documented. JAL and ANA serve Tokyo Haneda, Osaka and Sapporo, while international service ran at roughly one flight a day as of March 2025, with four weekly frequencies to Seoul Incheon and three to Taipei, operated by carriers including Japan Airlines, Korean Air and EVA Air. Larger consignments from the prefecture are trucked some 700 km down the Tohoku Expressway to Haneda (HND) or Narita (NRT), where export customs clearance normally takes place. Winter planning matters here: Aomori is among Japan's snowiest airports, kept operational by the well-known "White Impulse" snow-clearing team from December through March. For bulk apple exports, the Port of Aomori and road transport carry the volume, with the Tohoku Shinkansen handling passengers.
