## Description

Andravida is being rebuilt for a fighter that will not land there until roughly 2030. A €300 million programme is bringing the Hellenic Air Force base near Andravida in Elis, on the western Peloponnese (IATA: PYR, ICAO: LGAD), up to NATO standard with hardened aircraft shelters, new surveillance systems, fibre-optic networks and a rebuilt control tower, with construction starting in 2026 and running to the end of the decade. The resident 117th Combat Wing still operates ageing F-4E Phantom II fighters, while Greece's first F-35 Lightning II deliveries are expected from late 2028 and should reach Andravida around 2030. The base handles no civilian scheduled or cargo traffic and is best known abroad as host of the multinational Iniochos exercise, held 9–20 March in 2026. Shippers in the western Peloponnese route air freight through Athens (ATH), roughly 230 km away, while the port of Patras is far closer for sea freight and trailer traffic to Italy.
