## Description

The 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard is effectively the sole operator serving Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, landing ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules on a snow skiway of roughly 3,658 metres at about 2,835 metres elevation. The strip is run by the US Antarctic Program, not by any commercial airport authority. Flights arrive several times a week between October and February, typically unloaded and reloaded with engines running for a fast turnaround, then stop almost entirely through the polar winter at below minus 50 degrees Celsius. There are no cargo terminals and no integrators here; fuel, food and research equipment move as government research logistics. Since 2008 an overland traverse from McMurdo has supplemented the airlift, with each convoy trip replacing around 33 LC-130 flights. Freight consolidation for the programme happens far to the north at Christchurch (CHC) in New Zealand, the established USAP gateway, and no conventional customs clearance takes place at the station itself.
