## Description

Khvanchkara, the semi-sweet red that made the Racha highlands famous, is the region's best-known export — and none of it leaves by air from Ambrolauri (UGAM). Rebuilt and reopened in January 2017, the field is cleared for aircraft of up to 50 seats but is served in practice by Vanilla Sky (operator Service Air) with a 17- to 19-seat Let L-410, flying several times a week from Natakhtari airfield, a 20- to 30-minute drive north of Tbilisi. Those rotations run under visual flight rules and are cancelled routinely in poor mountain weather, which rules the route out for any time-definite consignment. There is no freight handling, no warehousing and no customs post on site. Wine and produce leave by truck over the passes to Kutaisi (KUT), about 100 km southwest, or to Tbilisi (TBS) some 250 km east, where Georgia's air cargo capacity and customs clearance are concentrated. For sea freight, the Black Sea port of Poti lies roughly 170 road kilometres to the west.
