Tourism, not trade, drives the traffic curve at Altay Xuedu Airport (AAT/ZWAT) in northern Xinjiang: passenger throughput reached 760,000 in 2024, up 50.48 percent, on the back of the region's ice-and-snow economy. Air cargo runs at a very different order of magnitude — roughly 580 tonnes of freight and mail were handled up to 8 December 2024, 13.13 percent more than a year earlier, all of it belly capacity in passenger aircraft. Run by Xinjiang Airport Group as a 4C-class feeder airport, it logged about 8,500 aircraft movements in 2024, eighth in Xinjiang and 126th nationally. Its 34 routes cover destinations within Xinjiang plus 17 inter-regional services to Ürümqi, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Xi'an, so shipments from Europe or North America always transit one of those points. No dedicated cargo terminal or scheduled freighter operation is confirmed at Altay; international air freight for northern Xinjiang clears at Ürümqi Diwopu (URC), roughly 650 road kilometres south, with onward trucking on the G216 and G217 highways. For overland flows towards Central Asia the Jimunai crossing into Kazakhstan is the relevant land port.
