## Description

Europe's greenhouse capital ships almost nothing by air: Almería Airport (LEI/LEAM) moves under 50 tonnes of freight a year, against roughly 786,000 passengers in 2024. The cargo terminal opened in 2002 has never attracted real traffic, so what little air freight exists travels as belly cargo on scheduled passenger flights rather than on dedicated freighters. Fruit and vegetables grown under the plastic of El Ejido and Níjar leave the province in refrigerated trucks on the A-7 and A-92 motorways, or by sea through the port of Almería. In November 2025 the regional government of Andalusia publicly called for an airport expansion that would finally create usable air cargo capacity for the agricultural sector. Until that happens, shippers with time-critical consignments route through Málaga-Costa del Sol (AGP, about 200 km west) or Alicante-Elche (ALC, some 290 km north-east), while intercontinental freighter capacity sits at Madrid-Barajas, which handled more than 840,000 tonnes in 2025. Customs follows EU single-market rules, and third-country clearance normally happens at those larger Spanish gateways, so a road feeder service belongs in every Almería quotation.
