## Description

An airfield's history says little about its usefulness to a shipper: Almaza (ICAO HEAZ), in the Heliopolis district of Cairo, hosted Africa's first aviation meeting in February 1910 but is today a closed Egyptian Air Force base with no civil freight handling. It became the first home of Egypt's military aviation in the 1930s, served as RAF Almaza during the Second World War, returned to Egyptian control in 1947 and was bombed during the 1956 Suez crisis. There is no cargo terminal, no commercial customs office and no access for freight aircraft, so the field carries no IATA code and does not appear in commercial routings. Air cargo for greater Cairo is handled at Cairo International (CAI/HECA) around 10 km to the northeast, the country's principal freight gateway and the base of Egyptair Cargo. Borg El Arab (HBE) near Alexandria, some 220 km northwest, is the usual alternative, particularly for consignments combined with sea freight through the port of Alexandria. Aviation enthusiasts can still visit the site: the Egyptian Air Force Museum occupies part of the Almaza grounds.
