## Description

Built in 1942 as Big Delta Army Airfield during the wartime expansion of Alaska's air routes, Allen Army Airfield (BIG/PABI) is today a US Army installation at Fort Greely, about 5 km south of Delta Junction, and carries no commercial cargo traffic. Its three asphalt runways — the longest 9,000 by 150 feet (2,743 m) — support heavy military airlift, including a purpose-built C-17 assault landing strip, and the field's core mission is sustaining the ground-based missile defence complex at Fort Greely. A joint-use agreement with the City of Delta Junction admits civil aircraft, but there is no scheduled service, no freight terminal and no commercial handling agent. Forwarders should therefore not plan air cargo into BIG: shipments for interior Alaska route through Fairbanks International (FAI), roughly 155 km northwest along the Richardson Highway. Intercontinental air freight for the state clears through Anchorage Ted Stevens (ANC), one of the world's busiest cargo airports and the standard transhipment point for Alaska-bound goods. For heavy or oversized consignments, trucking up the Richardson and Alaska Highways from Canada or from the port of Anchorage is usually the practical alternative.
