## Description

More than a thousand military parachutists pass through Alcantarilla Air Base every year: the «Méndez Parada» parachute school has trained every Spanish military jumper — army, navy, air force, Guardia Civil and national police — since 1947. Carrying the military code LERI and located in the Sangonera la Seca district of Murcia municipality near Alcantarilla, the base belongs to the Ejército del Aire y del Espacio and also hosts the EZAPAC special-operations engineers, the PAPEA display team and 721 Squadron with CASA C-212 Aviocar aircraft for training and short-range transport. There is no civil scheduled service, no commercial cargo handling, no ground handling agent and no customs post for air freight, so shipments can be neither tendered nor cleared here. Air freight for the Murcia region moves through Región de Murcia/Corvera Airport (RMU) some 25 km away, or through Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández (ALC) about 80 km to the northeast and Madrid-Barajas (MAD) for intercontinental freighter capacity. Most of Murcia's fresh produce exports — fruit, vegetables and citrus — travel to central and northern Europe in refrigerated trucks anyway, with the port of Cartagena roughly 50 km south adding a multimodal option. A recent development: NATO's support and procurement agency NSPA has tendered a state-of-the-art vertical wind tunnel for the parachute school, planned for service in 2027.
