Construction crews moved onto the airfield in April 2026 to add 900 feet to the single runway at Albert J. Ellis Airport (IATA: OAJ, ICAO: KOAJ), bringing it to 8,000 feet (about 2,440 m); Onslow County is the client and Balfour Beatty the contractor. The airport near Jacksonville, North Carolina, is the civilian access point for Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, and much of its traffic is military-related. American Eagle serves Charlotte and Delta Connection serves Atlanta; passenger numbers rose 8.2 percent from 2023 to 2024. No commercial cargo is handled on site, so air freight for Onslow County trucks to Raleigh-Durham (RDU) or Wilmington (ILM), both reached via US 17 and I-40. Alongside the runway work, the county is investing more than US$40 million in new hangars, a maintenance facility and an aviation careers building. Whether the longer runway will eventually bring larger aircraft and meaningful cargo capacity is not yet confirmed.
