## Description

A funding package of more than A$41 million, confirmed in mid-2026, will rebuild the runway, taxiways and apron at Albany Airport (IATA: ALH, ICAO: YABA) so the field can accept heavier and more modern aircraft. The money comes from the federal Growing Regions Program (A$14.7m), the Western Australian government (A$14m) and the City of Albany (about A$12.9m), which owns and operates the airport. Today Regional Express (Rex) flies Saab 340 turboprops to Perth as the only scheduled service, and no dedicated freighters call here. Air cargo is therefore limited to bellyhold loads, so the district's agricultural, timber and fisheries output trucks roughly 420 kilometres to Perth Airport (PER) for consolidation. The deep-water Port of Albany on King George Sound carries the bulk and timber exports, leaving sea and road as the dominant modes for heavy goods. For now ALH remains a passenger feeder; whether the upgrade brings east-coast or freight services is not yet confirmed.
