## Description

Passenger operations at DWC are still modest, but on the cargo side Al Maktoum International is already one of the most consequential freight airports in the Gulf. Opened in 2010 as a cargo-first facility in the Dubai South district, the airport currently handles around 1 million tonnes a year, with a master plan targeting up to 12 million tonnes at full build-out — backed by a USD 35 billion expansion approved in 2024. Emirates SkyCargo bases its freighter fleet here at Emirates SkyCentral, serving roughly 26 scheduled freighter destinations. The decisive asset for forwarders is the Dubai Logistics Corridor, a bonded link connecting DWC directly with Jebel Ali Port — the largest container port in the Middle East — and the JAFZA free zone, enabling sea-air transshipment within hours and without intermediate customs clearance. Dubai South Free Zone plots around the airfield host integrators, charter operators and e-commerce fulfilment centres. Road access via the E311 and E611 motorways puts both Dubai and Abu Dhabi within an hour's drive. For outsize, charter and project cargo, DWC has become the default choice in the emirate.
