## Description

Private jets, not pallets: Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI/OMAD) in Abu Dhabi is the first purpose-built business aviation airport in the Middle East and North Africa, and it handles no scheduled air cargo at all. Operated by Abu Dhabi Airports, it served as the capital's main airport until Abu Dhabi International opened in 1982, spent 1983 to 2008 as a military air base, and today runs 24/7 with no slot restrictions. There is no dedicated cargo terminal and no freighter handling; goods move only as accompanying baggage or small time-critical consignments aboard business aircraft. Shippers and freight forwarders looking for real air cargo capacity out of Abu Dhabi use Zayed International (AUH) about 30 km east, home to Etihad Cargo, or Al Maktoum International (DWC) near Jebel Ali, roughly 110 km up the coast. Customs clearance for import and export is handled at those gateways, with road feeder service between them taking one to two hours. In November 2025 AZI was confirmed as one of Abu Dhabi's first vertiport sites for advanced air mobility, with construction due to finish in the first quarter of 2026.
