Ondo State's cocoa and palm produce explain why Akure Airport (AKR/DNAK) carries an official designation as a perishable and non-perishable cargo airport. Operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), it opened on 8 February 1986 at Obale community, roughly 12 km east of central Akure. The terminal was refurbished in 2023, and in May of that year FAAN signed an agreement with a private partner to develop an "aerotropolis" around the site with several thousand jobs projected; verified throughput figures in tonnes, however, are not available. No scheduled international freighter service and no based cargo carrier are confirmed, so exporters should not assume an unbroken cold chain out of Akure.
