## Description

Passengers stepping off the Air Tahiti ATR at Ahe (AHE/NTHE) still face a 45-minute boat ride to the main village of Tenukupara, because the airstrip occupies its own motu on the rim of the atoll. Ahe sits about 500 kilometres from Tahiti in the Tuamotu archipelago, a flight of roughly an hour and a quarter from Papeete, with additional links to Manihi and Arutua. Cultured pearls were long the atoll's signature export, though only a few farms remain in operation today. There is no cargo terminal: shipments travel as strictly limited belly cargo, while bulky and heavy freight arrives by supply schooner from Papeete. Customs and import formalities for French Polynesia are handled in Tahiti rather than on the atoll. Tahiti Faa'a (PPT) is the territory's only airport with genuine air cargo handling and is, in practice, the consolidation and transhipment point for anything time-critical bound for Ahe.
