## Description

More than 3,400 kilometres of the Paraguay–Paraná waterway separate Pilar from the export terminals on the Río de la Plata, and it is that river, not the airfield, that carries the town's trade. Pilar is one of only two Paraguayan river ports offering container handling, the other being Asunción, and a roughly US$4.8 million expansion financed by the Fonplata fund is adding 20,000 m² of container storage; Paraguay has also invited DP World to build a terminal there. The Aeródromo Don Carlos Miguel Gimenez (PIL / SGPI) serves the Ñeembucú capital with light domestic and general-aviation traffic only, with no scheduled freighters, no integrator base and no cargo terminal. The long-established Manufactura de Pilar textile mill remains the main industrial employer. Air freight and customs clearance by the Dirección Nacional de Aduanas take place at Silvio Pettirossi International (ASU) in Asunción, while Formosa (FMA) across the border in Argentina is the nearest alternative field.
