## Description

P-3 Orion squadrons once hunted Soviet submarines from this island; the Navy left in 1997 and handed Adak (IATA: ADK, ICAO: PADK) infrastructure built for thousands, now kept up by a community of about 300. America's westernmost municipality, far out along the Aleutian chain, sees Alaska Airlines jets twice a week from Anchorage, their holds carrying groceries, mail and spare parts handled by Alaska Air Cargo; there is no dedicated freight terminal and no scheduled freighter service.
