## Description

Zero tonnes — that is what Statistics Denmark recorded for air cargo at Aarhus Airport (IATA: AAR, ICAO: EKAH) in both 2023 and 2024. The field at Tirstrup, some 40 km north-east of the city, is a passenger operation, handling 525,707 travellers in 2025, up 2.9% and back at pre-pandemic levels. Four new flexible gates able to take both Schengen and non-Schengen flights are being built for 2026, when Ryanair adds a daily London Stansted service and increases frequencies to Málaga, Riga and Gdańsk. A dual-use agreement signed with the Danish Armed Forces in December 2025 opens the site to military operations alongside civil traffic. Air freight from the region moves instead through Billund (IATA: BLL), about 80 km south-west and Denmark's leading cargo airport, or via Copenhagen (CPH, just over 250 km) for intercontinental volumes. Road access is by Route 21 and the E45 motorway, while the Port of Aarhus, Denmark's largest container port some 40 km away, carries much of the region's foreign trade.
