## Overview

Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Services is the freight division of Ethiopian Airlines Group, which is wholly owned by the Government of Ethiopia. The company was founded on 21 December 1945 and began operations on 8 April 1946 with five DC-3 aircraft; its head office is located at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. The group holds its own air operator certificate and is registered with EASA as a third country operator under the number ETH-0001.

Operating model: Ethiopian combines its own freighters with belly capacity on the passenger fleet and additionally offers charter services. As of September 2026 the freighter fleet comprises 12 Boeing 777-200LRF, three Boeing 767-300F and four Boeing 737-800F, 19 aircraft in total; a further five Boeing 777-200LRF are on order. Added to this is belly capacity on more than 145 passenger aircraft with an average age of around seven years.

Network: Addis Ababa (ADD) is the main hub and houses a highly automated cargo terminal with an annual capacity of one million tonnes. From there Ethiopian serves 70 dedicated freighter destinations and more than 145 passenger and cargo destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe and the Americas, including more than 60 African cities. Average daily uplift exceeds 2,000 tonnes. Key points in the European freighter network are Liège, Brussels, Madrid, Istanbul and East Midlands, and in Asia Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhengzhou.

Codes and documentation: Ethiopian operates under IATA designator ET, ICAO designator ETH and AWB prefix 071. Air waybills are issued in the format 071-XXXXXXXX.

Relevant for forwarders: Ethiopian was the first African airline to obtain IATA CEIV Pharma certification in 2022 and had it recertified in January 2025 both as an airline and as a ground handling agent. The acceptance cut-off in Addis Ababa is eight hours before departure for dry cargo and five hours for perishables. The liability ceiling is SDR 17 per kilogram; damage claims must be filed within 14 calendar days.
